What Will Happen During Acupuncture Treatment?
The initial consultation takes up to 1 and a 1/2 hours. In order to diagnose the cause of the illness at your first visit, questions will be asked about your medical, surgical and family history will be taken (if you are pregnant, obstetric history will also be asked). You will be asked about your sleep cycles, lifestyle and general routine (diet, exercise etc.) and present condition. Additionally a few simple Eastern palpatory tests, tongue examinations and abdominal diagnostic tests will be done.
Acupuncture needles are very different to the needles which are used to take blood, or give injections, they are solid, very fine and flexible. Disposable acupuncture needles are gently inserted into carefully selected points on the channels to stimulate the healing process. They maybe left in the acupuncture points for 10-20 minutes. Sometimes needles maybe inserted, manipulated and removed. Some patients report a tingling or a dull ache.
Heat maybe applied in the form of moxa, which is a special herb used to bring warmth to a specific point. In some cases advice on life style maybe given to help recovery.
